“Man, 83 and 143 others perish at Ejirrin”

Haunting and never to be forgotten This Day newspaper headline on November 9th 1996! On 7th November 1996, my beloved father Mr F I Ajumogobia along with 143 other souls perished on Flight ADC 086 en route from Port Harcourt to Lagos. He was well and strong and was 83 years old. Nothing can replace the love and presence of a father but we are thankful to God that he left a legacy of discipline, industry and integrity along with his widow and 5 adult children that were all already educated and independent.

On that flight, there were many families that were not so fortunate. Some families lost their sole breadwinner and the prospect of the education that their father had planned to give them. In some cases entire families were lost.

Can Your Family Afford to Lose You?

We tend to assume that bad things won’t happen to us and ignore the need for insurance until a major mishap or setback occurs; it is then that the impact of inadequate insurance coverage becomes glaring. It is time we all took insurance more seriously to protect the people we love the most. If you don’t have the necessary insurance cover, do make this one of your financial priorities before the end of this year.

Many of us board aircrafts at least once a month yet we ignore the need for life insurance or flight accident coverage assuming that the airline will provide compensation in the event of an accident. In many cases, the circumstances around an aviation accident involve a long drawn out process to investigate the accident, flight operations, aircraft maintenance schedules, pilot conduct, the weather and more. While the airline may eventually be required to provide some sort of compensation, this varies widely and depending upon the age of the deceased could be a pittance.
